What are hemoroids?Approximately 50% of people over age 50 have hemoroids , swollen veins in and around the rectum. Hemoroids are veins which are inflated. Every person has veins around the anus that strive for stretching under pressure, something like varicose veins in the legs. Should these veins become inflated, we start naming them " hemoroids." Internal set of veins inside the rectum, and external set of veins is under the skin around the anus. Hemoroids are known as "piles." They do not make you suffer from pain or bleeding. Difficulties may occur, however, when these veins become inflated due to pressure which is raised in them. High pressure may result from straining to move your bowels, from sitting too long on the toilet, or from other reasons such as pregnancy, adiposity, or liver malady.
